Summary : The deceased was a passenger in a vehicle which crashed into a power pole while being pursued by police officers in an unmarked police car.

The Coroner explored at the inquest the actions of the relevant police officers involved in the pursuit and whether their actions contributed to the death of the deceased.

The Coroner concluded that the police officers involved in the pursuit acted reasonably and in accordance with their training and WAPOL procedures governing emergency pursuit driving and their actions did not cause or contribute to the deceased’s death.

The driver of the vehicle in which the deceased was a passenger in pleaded guilty in the District Court at Perth on 4 April 2014 to a charge of dangerous driving occasioning the death of the deceased in circumstances of aggravation in that the driver was intoxicated, driving at high speeds and trying to escape from police at the time of the offence.  He was convicted and sentenced to 11 years imprisonment and made eligible for parole.

The Coroner found that the deceased died on 2 November 2012 as a result of head injury and death arose by way of unlawful homicide.
