The deceased was a sentenced prisoner at the time of his death at Wooroloo Prison Farm. He became involved in a verbal altercation with some younger prisoners. The deceased has then received a single punch to his chin causing him to fall backwards and strike his head on a concrete path. He sustained a fatal head injury and died as a result.
The inquest focused primarily on the circumstances surrounding the death, as it was a sudden and catastrophic event involving an assault by another sentenced prisoner.
The deceased’s assailant, Mr Garlett, was charged with unlawful assault causing the death of the deceased.
On 5 February 2015 Mr Garlett pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to 2 years and 8 months imprisonment.
The Coroner found the deceased died on 22 April 2014 at Royal Perth Hospital as a result of head injury in a man with chronic liver disease and death was by way of unlawful homicide.
