Inquest into the Death of Valfrids Klavins

Summary

The deceased died in Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital from complications of mesothelioma. The deceased was a sentenced prisoner at the time of his death having been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment and ordered to be detained indefinitely.

In August 2006 the deceased was transferred to Acacia Prison.

On 30 December 2011 he was transferred to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital where he was treated palliatively until he died on 9 January 2012.

The Coroner found that the cause of death was complications of mesothelioma and death occurred by way of natural causes.

The Coroner found that on the basis of the information available the quality of supervision, treatment and care of the deceased while in the custody of the Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Corrective Services was appropriate.
